South Mississippi Retardation Center Wards of the state abandoned by parents my students resided in cottages by level Cottage One housed the highest functioning Cottage Eight, the most severe Down's syndrome trisomy 21 spina bifida birth defects brain damage from accidents, some were from beatings Days well spent with sloppy kisses spontaneous laughter constant drool full bodied hugs broken intellects with giving hearts At end of work day I returned to the land of those articulate college degreed, the culturally elite sophisticated ones who did not drool but had closed cold hearts.
